Eco Stewardship Retreat to South Africa (2024)

Purpose

In support of target 3 of action agenda of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, stewards of industry from the private sector can lead and contribute to the conservation and restoration of land eco-systems.

About 25% of world biodiversity is found in Africa and one of the leading causes of biodiversity loss is land use change. Protected areas, indigenous & terrestrial territories and other effective area-based conservation measures are key to address land and sea-use change, safeguard wildlife and other natural resources as well as mitigate the effects of climate change.

About 80% of the remaining biodiversity is found in areas either owned, inhabited or managed by indigenous peoples and local communities. By engaging with these communities and aiding in their welfare, they are better able to be active in the efforts of conservation and restoration of their surrounding natural environment and its inhabitants.

Through reconnecting with nature and wildlife, participants experience the importance of their ESG imperatives in this delicate and intricate eco-system.

South Africa has no less than 19 national parks with numerous game reserves situated in some of them. We can contribute to wildlife conservation efforts, through ways such as identifying endangered wildlife species, preserving their habitats, and educating and supporting local communities.
